Developed for airplanes in World War II, airbags did not actually appear in automobiles until the 1970s. Function and Mechanism

Airbags are designed and intended to help the car passenger reduce his speed during a collision without getting injured. When a car abruptly stops, an unsecured passenger will continue moving forward with the same speed the car was going until a force acts on him. Airbags provide an impulse or a force over time. The more time the force has to act on the passenger to slow him down means less injury or damage caused.

Crash sensors do not signal the airbag to inflate unless the vehicle is moving at least six kilometers (roughly four miles) per hour. Considering the number of vehicles involved in a collision, the passenger can still incur physical damage even if his or her car is moving slower. The steering wheel airbag also does not help the passenger during a collision if another car hits them side on. This is where seatbelts come into the scene.

Seatbelts and Airbags

Proper airbag safety requires proper seating position and wearing of seat belts. A passenger should be sitting upright with both feet on the ground. The lap and shoulder seat belts should also be firmly in place for airbags to be effective during collision.
