Action $21.23 On the back of the album cover of ? and the Mysterians’ Action, there is a list of “the facts” about the band. Their “likes” mostly consist of “girls,” “science fiction,” and “the color black,” the combination of which pretty much describes their music. Action contains some of the best early-’60s, AM-pop-meets-garage-noise tunes — a mixture that also produced the L.A. sound of the Seeds and would later lead to the utter genius of the Velvet Underground. But like the Beatles when they were in Hamburg, ? and the Mysterians are content to play catchy renditions of their rock & roll favorites. They burn through the first verse of “Shout”; play some pure sugar pop on the groovy, fantastic organ-driven “Hangin’ on a String”; and give “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby” the garage treatment. But ? and the Mysterians have some real innovation, too. They start their version of the hit “Girl (You Captivate Me)” with dark, almost spoken vocals. Originals like “It’s Not Easy” are infused with R&B sensibilities. Roll On $15.18 The second album for Canadian-based, run-on-named combo Four80East, Roll On isn’t afraid to climb into a time machine and bring retro-funk/fusion headlong into the new millennium stylistically. A dance craze group influenced by the Austin Powers era as judged by the psychedelic cover art, the band touches on disco in some regards, the funkier side of Quincy Jones, the Headhunters, Stax soul, the Crusaders, or even chill shades of Jazzanova. Keyboardist Rob DeBoer sets the tone with his multiple overdubbing of electric keyboards and bass guitar, while drummer Tony Grace keeps the beat funky, and saxophonist Jon Stewart fills in here and there. It’s a production number rather than a live sound DeBoer seeks and succeeds with, giving youth-oriented acid jazz a new voice, and club DJs further food for thought. From the dance-oriented title track with Stewart’s flighty flute leading the way, the harder-edged “Back in Five” which is quite similar to the old pop hit “Son of a Preacher Man” done in a spacier Headhunters style with Stewart’s echoplexed sax, or the unpretentious, urban-street-level funk of “After All This Time,” it is easy to understand where Four80East are routed. But the band is not stuck in a rut, as “Loosey Goose” has more of a contemporary soul-jazz organ combo feel, guitarist Matthew Davis drives the melody, unlike on the another track “While the City Sleeps,” and a Euro-chill-type funk identifies “Race the Moon.” Mindful of cinematic chase scenes or black exploitation action films, the mean-streets feeling of “Just Passing Through” is undeniable, although Stewart’s soprano adds a nice contrast, while “Shot in the Dark” could have easily been a part of the soundtrack of movies like Shaft or Superfly — Jim Brown or Richard Roundtree take note. Only on the sparer, loose, Afro-Latin “Never the Same Way Twice” does the band somewhat step out of this mold. Fans of Galactic, Soulive, and Topaz should appreciate this look back at instrumental R&B-influenced popular music in transition, forwarded to current dance hall beats from a differently hip perspective. ~ Michael G. Where the Action Is $14.38 Sue Foley’s seventh studio album in a decade successfully follows on the heels of 2000′s terrific Love Comin’ Down. Less atmospheric and harder rocking, Foley writes or co-writes all but three tracks, and proves herself as talented a composer as singer and guitar slinger. There’s a bit of a Sheryl Crow feel to lots of this, but Foley stays locked in a blues vein, even on the more melodic rockers like “Baby Where Are You,” “Get Yourself Together,” and the mid-tempo title track. Colin Linden’s hands-off production lets the songs breath, and the singer sounds loose, relaxed, and in control throughout, especially on ballads like the emotional “Let It Go.” “Vertigo Blues” wades into primitive and swampy Creedence waters, aided by the album’s only bass-less backing, featuring Linden on eerie, slithering slide and Bryan Owings’ dark, pounding drums. A lumbering stab at the Stones’ “Stupid Girl” sounds too self-conscious, but versions of Etta James’ sexy “Roll With Me Henry” and an acoustic version of the obscure traditional Delta tune “Down the Big Road Blues” (best known from a version by Mattie Delaney) prove that Foley can be simultaneously sensuous and tough. Veteran backing musicians like Wilco’s Ken Coomer and keyboardist Richard Bell never hog the spotlight, keeping the attention on the songs and Foley’s short but stinging leads.
